Two blanks on the road, one big lift off it
A hard two weeks for the football club. No goals in two away games, two defeats, and a slide down the table. The brighter headline came from the city itself: Wrexham is through to the shortlist for UK City of Culture 2029, and the judges are on the way. Here is the fortnight, with the numbers that tell the story.
Football: a flat fortnight on the road
Two away trips brought two defeats and not a single goal. At Ewood Park on 24 October, an Andri Gudjohnsen double settled it for Blackburn. Six nights later at Bramall Lane, Ben Brereton Díaz struck early and Sheffield United held on for a 1 to 0 win. That was the Blades’ first league victory over Wrexham in 44 years. Wrexham managed one shot on target across the whole night.
The pattern is clear. Four defeats in the last seven league games, and the goals have dried up at the wrong moment. Phil Parkinson stays in charge and has spoken about being honest and looking hard at the side’s own form. A home game against Middlesbrough tonight is the chance to stop the slide.

Wrexham sit around 17th in the Championship as November opens, in the lower third rather than the play-off places many hoped for. Middlesbrough, near the top, visit tonight.
The good news: a City of Culture shortlist
Off the pitch, the city has something real to cheer. Wrexham has made the shortlist for UK City of Culture 2029, the second time it has run for the title after narrowly missing out to Bradford for 2025. The bid is community led, run by the Wrexham Community and Culture Trust with council support.
The campaign picked up a notable voice on 28 October when actor Rhys Ifans, a Welshman, publicly backed it. An expert panel appointed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport visits the county at the end of November to see the cultural offer first hand. The winner is announced in early 2027, and the prize is worth about £10 million in UK Government funding, plus the visitors and investment that follow the title.
